Religious Philosophy
Basic Premise
The American Pantheist Society is based upon a simple religious concept in that we believe "God is the Universe and that the Universe is God". Also fundamental to our beliefs is that "the goods of the earth are gifts from God". We have a responsibility to care for these goods as stewards and trustees, not as mere consumers and users.
Religious Dogma:
Our society does not have a set dogma or teachings that everyone must adhere to. We do not promise or offer direct or indirect contact with a super powerful god-father like being, forgiveness of one's sins and failures, a life after death, freedom from personal guilt or even eternal existence in some fictional paradise. All we can provide is an intelligent examination of our current world and the opportunity to better understand the marvelous experience of life itself.
Guide to Show the Way.:
We feel mankind is but on of the many life forms that originated from primeval stardust and that our life force is that of the eternal cosmos. We do not need intermediaries, messengers, special rituals or ancient books to find peace, personal fulfillment and harmony in life and nature, only a Guide to show the way. All that is required is an open heart and an acceptance that you are a unique being here in service to support our mutual success on planet Earth and maintain our special place in the Universe. In terms of religion," We revere the Universe, we care for Nature, and we celebrate Life". This is our creed and code of ethics.
The Universe and Us:
We are part of the universe. We are made of the same matter and energy as the universe. Our earth was created from the universe and will one day be reabsorbed into the universe.
The Universe creates us, preserves us, destroys us. It is deep and old beyond our ability to reach with our senses. It is beautiful beyond our ability to describe in words. It is complex beyond our ability to fully grasp in science.
Mankind is within the flow of the infinite. Humans evolved, exist, and will eventually become extinct, within the eternal passage of time. Man is part of endless substance; a piece of all that is. A person is made up of matter and energy that has always existed, and will always exist, in one form or another.
The chromosomes we received from our ancient Northern European ancestors been passed down through generations; our genetic programming can be traced back to the beginning of humanity, and to creatures that lived prior to man's evolution. These chromosomes will persist in living things for the duration of life on this planet. Over the infinite span of time, the atoms and the energy that constitute a human being have been part of stars, planets, galaxies, other life forms; everything imaginable.
When we die, all that we are will eventually return to a state of shared existence: forever.
Pantheism and the Cosmos:
The American Pantheist Society holds that the Cosmos, taken or conceived of as a whole, is synonymous with the theological principle of God. The Cosmos is divine, and the earth sacred and that our society is more than a philosophy. It is also a Way of Life.
